Expanding Children’s Mathematical Reasoning using Rational Numbers, Grades 3-5

Overview

This five-day content training will help teachers deepen their own understanding of rational numbers as well as give them some ways to identify aspects of student development of mathematical reasoning related to rational number ideas. Participants will plan sequences of instruction to help their students develop increasingly sophisticated thinking related to these ideas and assess student understanding to make future instructional decisions. There will be support for teachers to meet in professional learning communities (PLC) to discuss how children develop understanding of rational numbers, how to interpret students’ work on assessment tasks, and how to plan effective instruction.
