7-12 Life Science Day 5: Extended Learning II

Teachers select a SECOND of the three areas for deeper study- and attend only one of the Day 5 training days, based on their selected topic. (registration will take place during Day 3 training).
February 2 - Genetics
Teachers will have experience with developing lessons using data from biological databases. Also, teachers will complete a laboratory activity that focuses on genetic engineering.
February 7 - Ecology
Cedar Creek research sites and data bases. These same investigations and activities are easily transferable to the classroom.
February 10 - Evolution
The capstone experience for the training will be consideration of published data sets that contains some surprising trends and counterintuitive implications. The point will be to apply our understanding of evolution to create evolutionary hypotheses to explain an unusual observation. Teachers will also complete a student-centered inquiry activity. The organizing framework of the activity is the POGIL (Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) techniques that uses student-centered activities which lead student teams through a guided inquiry process that promotes conceptual understanding.
