9-12 Reasoning and Proof
This module provides high school teachers with strategies, activities, and background knowledge on reasoning and proof in several key areas of secondary mathematics. The first session provides an overview of what proof means in mathematics and how students think about this difficult concept. The second session provides an overview of recent research on students’ use of formal and informal reasoning in mathematics, and the key roles that logic and intuition play in a student’s ability to reason while problem-solving. The remaining sessions explore a variety of types of reasoning which are prevalent in mathematics, including algebraic/symbolic, geometric/spatial and statistical reasoning. Each of the five training days will be followed by four weeks of activities for teachers in their respective Professional Learning Communities, during which time they will analyze student work to assess their views and abilities with proof and reasoning skills.
